Local member John Laws has kindly agreed to describe his new role at Ryedale District Council. He is dealing with environmental matters, but John will give a fuller description of the role and how he intends to tackle it. The constitution was amended at the AGM in September 2020 in order to remove a small inconsistency. The current version of the constitution can be seen here. A paper copy that has been signed by officers to confirm the status of the constitution is held with local records.

Members at yesterday’s meeting of the consituency party were very concerned by a planning application for a service area close to Thirsk. We encourage members in the Hambleton District to consider opposing this application. Local members, and Thirsk Friends of the Earth have been resisting the application, and the FoE stance was described in the Northern Echo at https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/18630811.proposed-petrol-station-thirsk-contradicts-hambleton-local-plan–says-friends-earth/

There are objections on economic and environmental grounds, and many of them have been lodged with Hambleton Council, the planning authority. You can find an outline of the Thirsk Friends of the Earth concerns on their web site at http://www.thirskfoe.org/bpproposal.

Regional Responses to date

The first meeting of this new group will take place at 7 pm on Thursday 12 March. It will be held at the Worsley Arms Hotel in Hovingham, in the Kent Room on the first floor.

The purpose of the meeting is:

• for you to share what’s important to you in enabling this region to become carbon net zero;
• to identify the strategic priorities for Ryedale.

Simon Bowens from Friends of the Earth (FoE) will be joining us to facilitate the session. The number of Climate Action Groups supported by FoE across the UK is now up to 180.  If there is anyone else you know that would like to join this group, please share this link which gives a few more details and a map showing the Worsley Arms. All are welcome.  

The Thirsk & Malton Green Party meeting will be at 7.30 pm on Friday 13 March. It will be attended by Arnold Warnekin who was recently elected Regional Support and Development Officer. He’s offering help and support. Please come if you can. Let Josie know if you need a lift – we’ll do our best to arrange something. The venue is the Three Tuns in Thirsk, and we will try to find a good spot to gather, probably in one of the alcoves that are down a few steps. We’re aware that some people are not enthusiastic about patronising a Wetherspoons pub, but no suitable alternative has been found in Thirsk.
